Review: Dunno Y.. Na Jaane Kyon

Where do I begin? Firstly there is the inexplicable title, which when you see the film, makes even less sense. The title song has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar but even she cannot bring any elegance to lyrics that go: Dunno Y.
Equally inexplicable is the fact that the film is in English, which proves somewhat challenging to its cast. The writer Kapil Sharma, who also plays the lead commits double hara kiri. First he writes himself lines such as Bro, may your wish comes true this Christmas and then tries to say them earnestly.
Kapil plays Ashley, a married gay man who embarks upon an affair with a male prostitute. Meanwhile his unfulfilled wife, played by Rituparno Sengupta, is contemplating an affair with his brother and his mother, played by Zeenat Aman, is sleeping with rich men to make ends meet.
The Sharmas-director Sanjay and writer-actor Kapil-sincerely try to make a case for tolerance and same sex love but they are so challenged in the talent department that the film comes off as a two-hour joke.
The material is so lame that even the usually feisty Helen can't give it a lift. She shrieks while Zeenat Aman delivers her lines in a superbly hammy school play manner and Rituparna twists her face into approximations of unhappiness.
There are scenes here that will make you laugh until your sides ache - at one point, the family is playing passing the parcel and the punishment when the music stops is that the mother must slap the lecherous boss she's sleeping with.
In another scene, the prostitute is in a bubble bath with a top actor who calls him his stress buster. And just when you think it can't get any worse, Kabir Bedi waltzes in as the husband who abandoned his wife and children to join an ashram.
Dunno Y is a DVD must-watch. Honestly, this level of incompetence is hard to match.
