HBO's 'Game of Thrones': No girls allowed?

I was excited to see last night's premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones for a couple reasons. One, I need a new TV obsession -- until True Blood returns, my viewing lacks a certain pizazz. Two, as you may know, I have a soft spot for fantasy.

However, no one told me this fantasy comes with a caveat: It seems to be just for men.

Despite all the rave reviews the show has been receiving, I've gotta be honest: As a female viewer, I found little to love about G0T.

It's hard to pinpoint what disappointed me most: Maybe it was all the pointless, sexualized female nudity. Maybe it was the way most female characters were shown either standing by their men or, frankly, servicing them. Maybe it's how one of the only lines I can remember a woman speaking is -- ugh -- "Have you bled yet?"

Or maybe it's that gut-twisting incest storyline.

So far, HBO's Game of Thrones appears to be a 13-year-old boy's wonderland, chock full of bloody beheadings and bare-bosomed brothels. Men fight, kill, drink and rape their women. Brothers despise their sisters, and children grow up way too quickly.

Since I haven't read the books, I'm not sure if the landscape changes -- I hope it does, and quickly. I don't want to give up on what I'd hoped would be one of my new favorite escapes.

But sadly, after what I've seen so far, I can't say HBO's idea of fantasy matches my own.

If you watched the premiere, I'm eager to hear your feedback. (I'm particularly eager to hear from female viewers and/or fans of the books.) Leave it below, and I'll join the discussion as well.

  1. Stick to your home, cook, wash and rear children woman! The open wilds belong to MEN! GoT rules...those pansy True Blood and Twilight vampires can kiss my ass!

  2. @wargoth, I am a woman, and I love GoT. It is not just for men, and your behavior is not appreciated. Nor is your backward mentality that a woman should raise children and cook and stay in her house. I hope to the powers you believe in that you are a single man, because I pity the woman (or man) you make your life partner. Everyone is entitled to opinions. As are you as long as they are not offending an entire gender. Kindly keep your sexist remarks to yourself from here on forth.

  3. Game of thrones is a master piece fantasy fiction, twisted and demented but at it's political best. This is what used to happen since ancient eras till medieval age. Just because the author and director of the series portrayed it in finest details makes you run helter-skelter ? G.R.R.M has been voted as the best fanfiction authors of all times , ahead of J.R.R.Tolkien and others. If you can't gulp down the epicness, stick to TWILIGHT Series. It's for kids and girls. :)

  4. Perhaps you should re-check whether you've a soft spot for fantasy or fairy tales.

And perhaps you should read the first two volumes of the book, and works by other high fantasy authors to realize that you sound extremely stupid, at your best.

A gut-twisting incest storyline? Come on, your ravings are worse than that of a Victorian moralist trying to understand Sophocles' Oedipus plays.

The story of The Game of Thrones is suitably set in an early medieval world, and the TV series follows the novel quite faithfully. The conflicts, the violence, the sexuality are part of the imaginative landscape.

The real story is about conflict of emotions, and human predicament. Did that message go completely over your head? Try reading the books-it's all there.

  5. What the ???

One of the worst reviews for GOT I have ever read.

What makes GOT one of the best high fantasy is that it realistically portrays the medieval period and mixes it with superb storyline.

No girls allowed? Incest storyline? My prediction is that GOT would have been yet another generic fantasy series(or even one of the worst) if it is "female friendly" as you expect.

Let me assure you: If you don't like this show because of the reasons you stated in your article, then you better stop watching it; its not going to get any better according to your current expectations.
