CWG Scam: Lalit Bhanot to be interrogated today

Live news, Latest news India

New Delhi: Lalit Bhanot, the man whose comments on India's standards of hygiene invoked ridicule and anger, is to be questioned by the Enforcement Directorate today.

Sources say Suresh Kalmadi could be interrogated soon.

Bhanot has served as the Secretary-General of the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games. Kalmadi chaired that committee.

The Enforcement Directorate is studying possible violations of foreign exchange laws by members of the Organising Committee when they handled the arrangements for the inauguration of the Queen's Baton Relay in London in October 2009.

Days before the games, when filthy bathrooms and apartments at the Athletes Village were caught on camera and became a national embarrassment, Bhanot infamously remarked that foreigners' standards of hygiene are different than Indians'.

The massive corruption surrounding the Games has become the subject of parallel inquires launched by the government through agencies like the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate.

Recent reports suggest that the Central Vigilance Commission has found that nearly 7,000 crores may have been siphoned during the Games. The methods used include payments to parties that don't exist.
