New Delhi: Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi is being questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged corruption cases related to the Games.
The CBI is questioning Kalmadi over the alleged irregularities in the Rs 107 crore time-keeping contract awarded to Swiss company Omega for the Games. Till now the CBI has not named Kalmadi as an accused in any of the eight FIRs that have been filed in the Commonwealth Games corruption cases.
"Kalmadi was called by the CBI for questioning today that is why he is here," said Kalmadi's lawyer Hitesh Jain.
Commonwealth Games Organising Committee's former secretary-general Lalit Bhanot and former director-general VK Verma, both of whom are close aides of Kalmadi, have already been arrested in the time scoring scam.
The CBI is also working on the Games catering scam in which Kalmadi allegedly caused delays. Kalmadi's involvement in overlays scam where products worth Rs 2.8 crore were purchased for Rs 40 crore is also being investigated.
He has already been grilled once by the CBI on January 5, 2011.
On December 24, 2010 Kalmadi's house had been raided by the CBI to figure out the extent of his involvement in several scams that have unfolded following the games.
The CBI has also searched Kalmadi's two lockers at a bank in Pune to look for documents or any evidence related to the Queen's Baton relay and the Time Scoring and Result deal.
Kalamdi has been denying his involvement in any of the irregularities that have been reported but investigators say as the chairman of the organising committee, the buck really stopped with him.
Moreover, all his associates have either been arrested or questioned in different corruption cases related to the Games.
The Opposition has been demanding that a Joint Parliamentary Committee be set up to investigate the Commonwealth Games scam. Opposition leaders allege that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government has been slow to act against Kalmadi because of his political clout in Maharashtra.
