Ricky Ponting quits as Australia captain

Sydney: Ricky Ponting has quit as the captain of the Australian cricket team.

The 36-year-old made the announcement at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

His decision came ahead the selection of Australia's squad for a three-match ODI tour of Bangladesh next month.

Team Australia exited from the World Cup after losing to the Indian cricket team in the quarter final encounter. His 104 from 118 balls against India in the quarter final failed to prevent his team from crashing out of the tournament.

Team vice-captain Michael Clarke is likely to take over.
