Yuvran Singh ends Haddin's knock
Ahmedabad: Ricky Ponting and Brad Haddin played sensibly by taking ones and twos with an occasional boundary against Indian spinners to strengthen Australia's score in the quarterfinal at Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Dhoni chose to press a spin-pace combination into service with the off-spin of Ashwin and spearhead Zaheer Khan after Australia won the toss and elected to bat first.
Australian openers Brad Haddin and Watson approached the innings cautiously for a start but slowly opened up their shoulders to pick up scoring.
Zaheer was forced to bowl from around the wicket early in his spell after an official warning in his very first over for following through in the danger area on the pitch.
Haddin and Watson looked settled after a cautious start of 40 in the 10th over but Ahswin was able to find a way through Watson's defences to bowl him after he had scored 25.
Ricky Ponting strode in as Watson fell and Dhoni probably let a chance to attack the out-of-form Aussie skipper go by as he brought in Munaf Patel to bowl who was hit for 13 runs, including three boundaries, by Haddin.
Earlier, India's biggest worry on the morning of the match was the fitness of Virender Sehwag but thankfully for India and their fans, the swashbuckling opener returned to the playing XI.
Sehwag's inclusion also meant that one of the batter had to miss out and the axe fell on Yusuf Pathan. Munaf Patel retained his place despite a mediocre performance so far.
Australia, like India, have had an up and down World Cup so far but one good day here at Motera will put them just two matches away from fourth consecutive World Cup trophy.
While Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey's form remains critical to the success of middle order, Australia chose to beef it up with the inclusion of David Hussey in place of the leg-spinning all-rounder Steve Smith.
